Beautifully rendered in pen and ink, Thompson has created a love story that lasts.īlankets is the first Graphic Novel I have ever read. This groundbreaking graphic novel, winner of two Eisner and three Harvey Awards, is an eloquent portrait of adolescent yearning first love (and first heartache) faith in crisis and the process of moving beyond all of that. It's a universal story, and Thompson's vibrant brushstrokes and unique page designs make the familiar heartbreaking all over again. Over time though, their personal demons resurface and their relationship falls apart. Under an engulfing blanket of snow, Craig and Raina fall in love at winter church camp, revealing to one another their struggles with faith and their dreams of escape.

Craig Thompson's poignant graphic memoir plays out against the backdrop of a Midwestern winterscape: finely-hewn linework draws together a portrait of small town life, a rigorously fundamentalist Christian childhood, and a lonely, emotionally mixed-up adolescence. " -The Guardianīlankets is the story of a young man coming of age and finding the confidence to express his creative voice. Their most intimate and vulnerable states are on full display during their short strolls in their little winter escapades and the beautiful imagery on the pages."Quaint, meditative and sometimes dreamy, blankets will take you straight back to your first kiss. I was drawn to their growing friendship and relationship through the illustrations. All of this adds up to a responsible and determined girl who carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. She also has an elder sister named Julie, and a new niece that she’s constantly looking after. Readers get to know Raina as somewhat the breadwinner of a family-taking care of her two adopted siblings who both have Down Syndrome.

Raina herself is almost like a girl who Craig dreamed up, never thinking that he would actually meet her. You know… people that live outside the Midwest say we must be crazy to live in the snow and cold, but I think we gain a lot by enduring these winters. However, this portion of the story was a little bit abrupt, and I would have loved to have learned more about their brotherhood. It served as a great start and also showcased an intriguing bond between the siblings. The initial storyline of Blankets focuses on the story of Craig’s and his brother’s sibling rivalry but that portion of the graphic novel wound up on the back burner in favor of Thompson’s other experiences.
